New rules

While observing life at university here, it's difficult to create a new
set of rules.

  • The emergency door can be used to access the classroom; sometimes you use time to go around the block.
  • An Italian food kiosk must be built in the central part of the campus
  • A free coffee and water machine should be installed on each floor of the blocks
  • The sound of the fire bell ought to be changed to rock or pop music
  • The lessons should start at 10 o'clock
  • The people are allowed to walk and go to the lessons with their dog
  • The hawks should be introduced to hunt some gulls and crows
  • Buses and trains ought to be free to go to Brighton from the campus

University's new rules !

I remarked that the life on the campus was really boring and that they have no imagination.
According to the students, courses are not fun and it is difficult to concentrate on them.
That's why I decide to change the rules in the university !

  1. First of all, students are now allowed to come to the course at the time they want.
  2. The university administration can't send you warnings when you miss courses.
    Secondly, they can have their breakfast in class because it will be served every morning.
  3. Then, students must do their homework on the class walls so they don't forget them the next morning.
  4. From now, the students ought to revise their course with a friend because they are allowed to do the English tests in pairs.
  5. After the course, students are not allowed to go home, they have to come to the meeting house to find out about the night social programme. They shouldn't stay at home more than twice a week or they will become depressed.
  6. They also should propose some ideas to organize parties on the campus, and to meet other people.
With these new rules, I hope life on campus will be better. Don't forget that to work well, you have to be relaxed !! So don't get too tired !

New rules at Sussex University

Your university needs new rules because the regulations, the serious and the hard-working students aren't improving their English. So the new rules are :

Being polite is not an obligation, this university is yours! You are allowed to be late and impolite. Your English could be improved if you are relaxed.

If teachers give you homework you don't have to do it, it's not compulsory. So if one teacher is too severe you must leave his course and go to the secretary.

You should smoke in your classroom, it's good for your brain.

You mustn't switch off your mobile phone in class, you can receive an important call.

You don't have to be present at all your courses because if you're tired, you can't understand and learn anything.

You can draw on the table in order to have records. Moreover, the future students will know who was here before.

You are allowed to talk in class! Being friendly is an excellent quality

If you are angry, you can hit who you want, you'll feel better after.

You can park your car anywhere in the campus and so don't waste your time to looking for a legal parking spot.

You are allowed to bring your animals in class.

If you respect these rules, your English will improve !!!!

Rules and regulations

Create a new set of rules for life at university using the language you learnt yesterday:
can/can't, are(n't) allowed to, have got to/must/mustn't, should(n't)/ought(n't) to.

the lottery

If I won the lottery, I would like to to have a company maybe in England. However, I'll have to speak English very well, so maybe I'll make others trips like to Australia or Ireland to improve my English.
Then, I'd also help my family by buying a camping car for my parents because they want one.
Also, I would like to have a house in Spain as my sister lives in Spain and together we will buy a holiday house in Ibiza!!!
Moreover, I would buy a black Audi A3 because I love this car, and for my boyfriend I would get a mercedes.
As I love to go to shopping, I would go to London and buy all the clothes that I want !
However, I think it's important to save money to help my children in the future...

Lottery dreams

What would I do?!
It depends on the quantity of the money that I won with the lottery.
However I would like to continue the studies that I am doing now.
I could spend this money on buying new instruments for my research.
I would also spend money on building a new house with a big recording room and
a grand piano.
I could install a wind turbine to produce money with clean energy
and with the gains I would help my friends with their dreams.
Of course I could travel but I think only for studying...may be...I don't like
travelling without an aim.

...If I was the lottery Winner...

...If I won the lottery, I would save my money on a bank and buy some safe shares for invest in.

After that I’ll give a part of this money to my close family (father, mother, sister), 10% for each of them.

After that I would buy an apartment in Paris and other properties for increase my inheritance for my future child, my wife and my close family if they need it.

After spending long holidays I would almost certainly be a property developer to increase my inheritance.

More of than I would probably live in a country where there is low taxes on properties and inheritance.

I’d probably spend a total of 80% of my winnings and I’d keep 20% in an secure bank where the money would stay untouched for 10 years.

For my personal pleasure I would buy sports cars and a boat and villas by the seaside, but I wouldn't use my lottery money, just use the interest of my savings and the rent from my properties. In this way that I would not lose any money, and I would probably be a millionnaire for ever !

One other thing is the problem of women. I definitely wouldn’t want a wife who loves me for my money. So at the beginning I would almost certainly hide my fortune from her and if she really loves me and me too, I’d marry her. This is important because money can offer you happiness but there are certain things you cannot buy like friendship and love.

Money can make you addicted and dependant to on it, so I think it is dangerous.

...If I won the lottery, I would definitely be careful...

Jackpot dreams

If I won the lottery, I wouldn't like to be a famous person, I think that I would prefer to keep my life like before. I could do a lot of things but it depends on the quantity of money that I won. Maybe, I would buy a very beautiful house in Australia for my parents because they love this country. If I won the lottery, I could travel around the world in order to discover new cultures and landscapes.
I would like to buy a lot of nice clothes and jewels which are very expensive, and I know that my boyfriend wants to have a beautiful car so, I might buy him the car of his dreams.
I could also give money to the developing countries and to some associations such as Greenpeace or aid workers.
I would like to organise a big party with all my friends and if it's possible I may help them if they want something.To finish, I would like to put the rest of my jackpot winnings in a bank for the future if I need something.

If I was millionaire...

If I won the jackpot in the national lottery and I won £15.9 million, for instance, I would like to build a huge house with a big garden, a swimming pool, and lots of new technologies inside.

Secondly, I would like to travel around the world, and more particularly to
visit Thailand, China, Peru, Cuba and Australia. And why not, like Gokhan,
buy an island !

Next I would create my own company but I do not know in which sector.

And most importantly, I would like my family to be happy because I love them...

I think we could do incredible and amazing things if we won in the lottery, and maybe one day, we will be lucky !

If i won the lottery..... ; )

Heloo,,,,today I am going to speak about if I won the lottery. If I won the lottery, I'd like to do a lot of things. First of all, I'd like to give some money to my parents and my brothers and sisters. Then I'd like to have my own business like companies. Secondly, if I travelled around the world, I'd like to see all the museums and archaeological sites around the world. Finally, I'd like to buy all kinds of cars. and a big house in Los Angeles. I'd like to help poor people like in Africa and other countries too.

___IF I WON THE LOTTERY...

____________________________________________________________________

What would I do?
...A lot of things!
But one in particular.

Since my childhood, my biggest dream has always been the same.
I'd like to travel around the world with the aim of helping developing countries. But my dream could only be fulfilled if I won the lottery.
Then I'd like to tell you what I'd like to do in this case.

First of all I'd buy a private plane in which I could travel. Of course I'd employ a pilot!
Secondly I'd meet some people during my trips who would explain to me what they need to have a better life.
Then I'd been concerned about other cultures and I'd try to learn some new languages, even just a few words.
Finally I'd give some money to build new schools, to pay teatchers, to build new hospitals and pay the employees, to build new roads, new shops, to import some food...

To conclude, I think it's not too bad to work and earn our own money, every day, every month.
But two studies have arrived at very different conclusions.
Some people think that money make happiness, some people think the contrary...

____________________________________________________________________

millionaire

If I won the lottery, I'd buy a car. For example a Rolls Royce, an Aston Martin, and a Ferrari. I'd like to customise every car. I'd buy big wheels and some monitors. Of course it is lower than the normal car. If I drove the car, I'd be popular and stand out with the girls.
And I'd like my parents to travel. My parents work everyday except Sunday. And they are old. So if they don't travel now, they'll not be able to do it.

If I won the lottery ........ oh it would be fanstatic !!!!!

If I won the lottery, firstly I would like to travel around the world in order to see a lot of beautiful things like landscapes or famous monuments (palaces ... ). I wouldn't do this for a year I would like to travel every year during my holidays , I might go with my family.
Then I would buy a new car, maybe a blue or red mini.

If one day I had a lot of money I might invest a part of this in developing houses because I think it's the best investment nowadays.

If I won the lottery, I would like to help some people in the world especially children, I could help to build hospitals for example. I would like to build a big animal reserve in order to protect them.

If one day I had the luck to win the lottery
, I would do all of the above, but I would continue my studies because I think that money even if it's very important in life, can't provide everything.

If I won the lottery

I would travel around the world..... What would you do? Try and write 100 words about your dreams and wishes!!

I'd like to talk about pollution. Pollution is such a big problem for all the world, especially nowadays. There are a lot of reasons for this problem. The main problem is finding solutions. This problem has been increasing since the industrial revolution because too many factories were built after the industrial revolution and new ones are still being built. Also people use many things that contaminate and damage the environment. Everybody needs these things because our life styles are always changing. So we our lives are much more modern because of these inventions. But people don't think about this problem. If you want everything to be good for your children, you have to do something about this pollution and you have to have solutions. For example; people are always inventing things that change our lives and also damage the environment, but people don't have solutions. Inventions are much more than solutions. Because people do things unconsciously. You don't have to do many things, but if everyone does something to help, it would be better. For example you can help about using fewer cars , travelling by plane, recycling...etc
We have the same problems in my country. People and also the government are more conscious now, but that's not enough. For example; there are a lot of recyling boxes in my city but nobody uses them, even the refuse collectors. Also there are not enough regulations in factories. Anyway we need sollutions and I think the most important solutions are legal principles, more controls and education.

Car pollution

Now everybody knows that a big part of Global Warming is from the CO2 rejected by cars.

It's a serious problem because there are more and more cars, and it is a catastrophe for the environment in developing countries. There are other technologies, like the electric car or hybrid cars. But unfortunatel it is rare to see CO2 free cars.

An American city during summer... and winter...

The solution for reducing vehicle emmissions is to offer every company and people free car taxes if they buy a clean-car.

And for Police, Firebrigade, Hospital and for every bus, there should be a subvention to buy electric vehicles, and after a couple of years they would be obliged to buy it.

I think the state needs to collect taxes on petrol, and reduce the price of hybrid cars and electric cars.

I think the hybrid car is the future, and after every car will work with solar energy... I think.

pollution in paris

Each day on the radio you can hear what the level of pollution is like and sometimes the level increases.

I think that the main reasons are cars , buses , scooters and any kind of engine with a motor. In theoutskirts of Paris you can see a cloud of pollution. You don't see it everyday but often.
I also think that if the people continue to use too many engines with motors then one day you might become sick.
When you hear the level every morning you are afraid because it the highest level in France.

What is the solution?
it's very difficult to find a solution because everybody uses cars and one day a year there is a day without cars so people take buses.
Generally buses use biofuel because it's better for the population in Paris and so the pollution is reduced.
Pollution is responsible for global warming and also produces the greenhouse effect.
I think that in order to reduce pollution, people in Paris should change their cars or just fuel.

Why?
First of all because there are some different fuels like vegetable oil or bioethanol and to reduce pollution it's better to use this kind of fuel.

Then if the government imporves France's economy farmer will have more work.

It's important to know that if the population doesn't reduce its fuel comsumption global warming will get worse.

Saudi Arabia

hello. Today I am going to speak about global warming in my country. First of all, pollution is hihg in the capital city Riyadh because there are more than 5 million people living there. Imagine how many cars, buses, trucks there are. It makes the air dirty and we can't stop people driving.
The big problem is people don't walk because the weather is too hot and my city is very big. It's difficult to go from one place to another by foot. Maybe if the government enocurages us to use trains it will help. Secondly some people dump their bins on the streets. They aren't sensible and they don't konw what it's going to be like in the future. Finally the government is enforcing some laws for this situation.

The consequences about human activities

In the lastfew years, Planet Earth has changed a lot because of human activities.
In order to produce more and grow richer, our planet is being sacrified by countries and population.

~ More and more forests are being damaged to produce paper and furniture. The problem is that we need forests because trees emit oxygen in the air and moreover, there are lot of animals which live in this environment.
~ In addition, cars pollute and companies produce fumes which are harmful for us and the environment. There is to much pollution emitted by companies and cars everyday...
~ Next, people throw a lot of rubbish on the street or in the sea.

So the consequences of the human indifference towards Planet Earth are the global warming and all things which follow.
Because of the pollution, there is a hole in the ozone layer. This hole allows the sunrays to pass through the ozone layer ; that's why there is global warming and also the greenhouse effect.

Perhaps the next generations will understand these ecological disasters.

The catastrophes can be tornadoes, hurricanes, extreme weather, a rising sea level or again what is most likely : lot of floods.

That's why we must take care of our environment for everybody's health, for the future generations and to save animal species.
I think it is not difficult to make an effort. So do it...

the cars and the pollution, can we solved this big problem ????

In our countries the biggest problem reagarding pollution is the car !!! In rich countries there is a lot of traffic, people have to take their cars or take the bus in order to go to work, to the supermarket ....
But when you use your car it's not a good solution for your planet even if it's
more convenient for you.

A car for example, emits a lot of gas into the air and these chemicals and other substances have a harmful effect on air, water or land.
Then a car needs petrol or diesel, but nowadays fuel is in danger because it will disappear because people use too much petrol !!

In our countries like France some companies especially car companies like Peugeot, Renault and other brands are working on a new concept about car which use water or air .
I think it's a very good idea even if nowadays there isn't water for all the people in the world but if in the future we can use a car without pollution it will be fantastic !!!

But I think that the government is not ready to accept these concepts because with petrol they get a lot money through taxes . If one day all cars use air the government couldn't have the control !!! In my opinion because of this the government in France won't allow people to use biofuel.

Global warming

The weather is changing in Japan. It is extreme now.
The coldest temperature is -17 degrees centigrade this winter in my city. The highest is about 35 degrees centigrade last summer.
And it didn't rain much last summer. So there was a shortage of water. Sometimes we have typhoons in summer - heavy rain and wind. But we din't have many. Some people had restricted water use.
When I travel to another city, I use a car everytime in Japan.
I've come to England, I think about environment. We must think more about the Earth. Because we live on the Earth.

Global Warming

I'm going to speak about global warming, and I'd like to introduce to you several wildlife species affected by the pollution of environment.

For several years certain animal and floral species have stared to disappear in the world.
Nowadays, they are hundreds and thousands of fish, insects, trees, plants, birds, bacterias, mammals, which are disappearing because of global warming.

Indeed, it is not just the human race which is suffering from the pollution around the world, animal and vegetation species are also affected by the dryness, the extreme climate, floods, freezing rains, the hole in the ozone layer, dangerous sunlight, too much UV, deforestation, desertification, ... etc...

So little by little, certain races are completely killed and have disappeared forever.

For example, polar bears need icebergs to live.
However, icebergs tend to melt because of global warming.
Consequently, polar bears are disappearing slowly...

We have to pay attention to this ecological problem, even if it costs a lot of money, because if you do nothing to avoid pollution, animals, vegetation and the human race will completly disappear.

What a shame if the human race will killed by itself!

the greenhouse effect

Before the development of our countries the world was better and today we are suffering the consequences of this development. We thought that inventing new factories, new nuclear arms, new ways to develop was the most important thing to do but now we know that there are more important things to do such as save our planet !

explanation of the greenhouse effect :

Around our planet there is the ozone layer in the atmosphere which is becoming smaller.
Humans pollute the planet a lot, and so we can speak about global warming.
The hole in the ozone layer doesn't allow us to keep the UVA out and so the temperature increases each year.

Consequences :

The icebergs are melting because the temperatures is getting hotter.
So the sea-level is rising and there are lots of risks of floods, tornadoes...
Then lots of species of animals are disappearing (certainly because there is too much UVA).
The problem of deforestation, desertification and water shortage is a terrible event
Humans are suffering more from cancers than before because they receive too much UVA.

Solutions :

Usually, lots of people speak about global warming but nobody is really doing anything to save our planet and our descendants.
First of all, I think about ways of prevention and reducing the greenhouse effect.
We have to educate children at school to recycle their rubbish .
I think create a law to limit the consumption of water and electricity per person is a good solution.
There are too much cars in our country and the system of buses is not really developed beause people prefer to take their cars. So if there are more buses maybe people will take this communal transport.
The simplest thing to do is not to dump our rubbish anywhere.

So I can't save the world alone but if everybody is careful and tries to help our planet (with recycling for example) I think the "health" of our earth will be better.

Global warming

Yesterday we talked about global warming. Choose one of the topics which you talked about in your group to write about. What can we do about this situation? What is happening in your country?

The "Printemps de Bourges" festival

The "Printemps de Bourges" is a music festival which takes place every year during the April holidays. It was created by three men who had a strong link with music in 1977.

The main characteristic of this festival is that there are only a few well known musicians who come because the principle is to discover new talent.
- On the day, there are 3 or 4 open air stages where bands perform for free and the music played on these stages is often quite varied.

- At night, locals bars host music groups to play and everybody goes out and thousands of peoples walk from bar to bar until the next morning to see them.

There are already concert tickets on sale. This year, the will festival host numerous artists such as Rose, Renan Luce, Sefyu, Justice...

For more information, you can visit the official web site of the festival :
www.printemps-bourges.com

Venice Carnival

In my country there are a lot feasts linked to popular traditions.
For example in the North of Italy there is German influence in our festivals.

In particular, in my region there is the Carnival of Venice in this period.

The Venice Carnival is known for its fascination and mystery which has been around for 900 years.

In the original carnival people can feel the atmosphere of the Carnival and how it was during the Calm Republic.

Usually the Carnival lasts for about two weeks before Lent.

This is a popular festival for Venetians and foreigners. During this festival foreign musicians meet each other and there is a mix of foreign people and different kinds of culture.

The Deauville American Film Festival

I would like to present the Deauville American Film Festival which takes place in Deauville, in Normandy.
This festival is devoted to American cinema and was established by Lionel Chouchan and Andre Halimi in 1975. Since its origin, the festival has not been competitive. However, this festival began to award prizes in 1995 for feature films and in 1998 for short films.
The American festival has been attended by important stars like Robert de Niro, Clint Eastwood, George Clooney, Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Sharon Stones, Al Pacino, Michael Douglas, Julia Roberts and so on...

May 1st is a bank holiday in France

In France, since 1947, May 1st has been called Labour Day or May Day!!!!!!! This date is often celebrated in some countries around the workd but not everywhere. First of all, this date celebrates the union of workers who requested eight hours of work a day. In France we had to wait until the 29thof april 1947 for this date to become official.

On this day, in France, people give each other an attractive small sprig of lily-of-the-valley which is a flower in the form of white bells and the symbol of spring. In France this flower is a lucky plant. This tradition started on the 1st of May 1561 when the French king Charles IX, after having recieved a sprig of lily-of-the-valley , decided to give this flower to the ladies of him court every year and the tradition was born !!!!

This bank holiday seems be good but there are some demands because a law permit people to sell "muguets" (the flower) without tax and the florist disagree with this law because it's for a bad idea for them!!!

NATIONAL DAY

The 14th of July in France is the national day and each year there is a celebration on this day.

Why is the 14th of July the national day in France?

In fact on the 14th of July 1789 there was the French revolution and everybody went to the Bastille because before it was a prison and people took weapons to fight against the French army.

One year after, they celebrated the day of federation in the Champs de mars in Paris.

On the 21st of May, 1880 Benjamin Raspail passed a law to make the national day each year on the 14th of July

Now each 14th of July there is a military parade and a demonstration which takes place every year in numerous places around France on the occasion of its national holiday.

The main parade is in Paris. It goes down the avenue des Champs-Élysées, to the place de l'Etoile until Concorde.

There are the other parades of a much lesser scale in the other cities of France, for the same occasion, by local regiments.

There are also fireworks each 14th of July to celebrate.

Coming-of-Age Day

There is Coming-of-Age Day in Japan. It's the second Monday of January. On that day, there is a celebration ceremony in each city for people who are 20 years old in this year. This is because in Japan you become an adult when you are 20 years old. You can drink alcohol and smoke legally.
Men wear a suit or a Hakama. Women wear a Furisode. Hakama and Furisode are traditional clothes.
Nowadays they have a drink at the ceremony. And they don't listen to mayor's speech. Sometimes they is violence. Of course they are arrested immediately. This is a big problem.
Every city proposes new types of ceremonies. But the most important is changing their way of thinking.

Traditional food of Saudi Arabia

Helo,,, I am going to speak about the traditional food of my country. We don't have a special day but we have a lot of traditional food. I am going to tell you about a very special food. It's from our genersity when guests come to your home you should have MOFATH which is a whole lamb with rice like in the picture :). If you have a
very big party and important people you should have camel on big plate with sumal?? lamb. I know its crazy
but this is the way we are ;). Sometimes its costs you a lot if you have more than 10 people but whatever.

Its ok if you grill some other meat instead. people will understand you.

_Cannes_Film_Festival_

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm going to talk about the Cannes Film Festival, founded in about 1940. It's the oldest and the most famous film festival in the world, which takes place in the month of May.
This year, it starts on the 14th of May for two weeks.
I live near the town of Cannes in the South of France, so I go every year to the "Palais des Festival" to meet lots of stars. But often, stars come with their bodyguard, so it's too difficult to approach them, to ask them for a photo or an autograph, or anything else.
Speaking about the programme, there are about twenty films in the competition. There are also about a hundred actresses, actors, directors, screenplays... in the competition.
The best film and the most prestigious is awarded with the Gold Palm.
The jury is made up of a President, various film personnalities, international critics, industry profesionals, and journalists.
Since 1940, the Cannes Film Festival has become an important showcase for international films. Moreover, it's much more of a film competition because there are lots of extra events, exhibitions, specials screenings, etc...
Carnaval of Nice
Each year, there is the carnival of Nice in February which lasts for 2 weeks.
People dress up in very funny costumes during this festival period.
Each year there's a different theme, I remember last year it was for the rugby world cup.
There are lots of different floats and parades in the street and many people watch them.
People are always smiling and they throw confetti.
During the week there is a special day : the battle of flowers. People who are in floats throw lots of different kinds of flowers.
Last year I worked in the carnival and I was a Hakka dancer (the famous dance of the all blacks) , I was dressed in yellow, my face was painted yellow too, with a blue flower around one eye and a red lipstick, I was a little bit ridiculous and I danced in front of about a thousand people.
During this period we have "mardi gras" like the English "shrove tuesday", we cook crepes for all the family it looks like pancakes and you put what you want on them.
I'm a little bit disappoincted not be here for the Carnival this year because the city of Nice has had lots of renovations, and now we have the tram. Nice has become a great place and next year I will see the carnival in this "new city".
Ephiphany
I would like to talk about a big feast that all French people keep.
Epiphany is a Christian feast day which celebrates the "shining forth". The feast corresponds to jesus' presentation to the Kings.
The feast falls on January 6th in France. In general, people eat a big flat cake with a broad bean in it. Sometimes some people collect this bean and they put it on a shelf in the living room.
Usually, people see their family during this festival and so you can spend time with them. The aim of this game is to find the broad bean, so, when you eat a part of this big flat cake, you hope that the broad bean is into your part. Often with the flat cake, you must drink something.
After, when you find the borad bean you have a paper crown on your head and so you are the King or the Queen of the day.
In the south of france, people don't prepare a flat cake but a brioche, which is similar to a crown, called "Frangipane".
Often, people can eat the flat cake for one week, between the first of January and the 6th of January.
21 June in France
The 21st of June in France, is the day of the Music.
This event started in the city of Metz (France) in the late 70's, and grew quickly around the country.
This event was made official in 1981 in France by the French's Culture Minister, Jack Lang.
Why the 21st June? It's because it's the day of the summer solstice.
This music festival has two goals:
  • Amateur musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets.
  • Many free concerts are organized, accessible to the public.
The 21st of June is the only day of the year where musicians can play all the night, there is no noise restriction.
Inspired by the French tradition, a lot of countries have copied this music day, like in Belgium, Germany, Costa Rica, Israel, India, Morocco, Colombia and other countries.
And in 2007 the first music festival was in New York.
In Paris there are concerts on every streets and everybody is on the street dancing, singing, listening or playing music. It is a general party, if you have never seen this event I'd definitely recommend it to you.
